A gorilla safari is divided into three categories, the pre-gorilla trekking, meeting the gorillas, and traveling back to the park offices after encountering the mountain gorillas.
Pre-Gorilla Trekking Photography
The pre-gorilla trekking stage is the stage covering your transfer from the airport to the gorilla accommodation, and the transfer from the lodge to the gorilla trekking briefing point. Many people rarely take photos of these transfers but if you wish to capture a wholesome gorilla trekking experience, taking photos at this stage is important.
Photos are often taken on the roadside before reaching the gorilla national park while others are taken at the park gate and the final one is taken once you reach the park offices. Breaking down your photography into stages will help you remember your some of the highlights of your transfer to the gorilla national park.
Gorilla Trekking And Meeting the Gorillas Photography
Once you reach the briefing point as early as 7:30 am, it is recommended you take a photo during your briefing and a photo after the briefing. The photo after the briefing is very important for capturing your first gorilla trekking steps.
It is recommended that you take at least two photos in the forest on your way to meet the mountain gorillas. If the part you are trekking has a river trail, it is recommended to take a photo at the river banks.
Once you are five minutes away from meeting the gorillas, you will be briefed again about gorilla trekking etiquette. It is recommended to take a photo at this stage. At the end of this briefing, you will set out to meet the gorillas for an hour.
The highlighted photo of your gorilla trek will be at the moment you encounter the mountain gorillas. Do not be too excited to simply take photos of gorillas, rather seek that moment where you can have a photo of you and the gorilla(s) in the same frame.
The rangers or guides will help you to take the most important photo of your gorilla trek, that is the moment when the gorillas are too close to you.
After Meeting the Gorillas
After meeting the mountain gorillas for one hour, you usually set out for your lunch in the forest before proceeding back to the park offices. At this stage, you can take at least two photos; one during your lunch break and one on your way back to the park office.
The last photo should be when you are receiving a gorilla trekking certificate at the park offices. However, sometimes you can again take another photo when you are exiting the park though it is very rare for people to consider this photo.
