Short Treks
The Ruhija sector has a total of four gorilla families. That is the Mukiza family, Kyaguriri family, Bitukura gorilla family, and Oruzogo family. But it is not just because of these four families that it is highly recommended, it is for the fact that most of these families are not often very far from the main road.
The Ruhija sector is highly recommended for anyone interested in short treks. However, it should be noted that there are some days that the short treks are impossible more so when the gorillas travel relatively further from the main road.
Good Road Network
When we say good road network, we actually do not mean tarmac. The exception of Ruhija sector roads from other sectors is the quality of its none tarmac roads. Regardless of the weather, the roads remain very passable.
However, there are rare instances during the rainy seasons where landslides cover part of the road with soil. But apart from that, the sector is very accessible regardless of the weather.
Proximity To Lake Bunyonyi
Many travelers who go gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable national park often consider lake Bunyonyi one of their stops either before visiting Bwindi or after gorilla trekking. Of all the four gorilla trekking sectors; Ruhija is the closest sector to lake Bunyonyi.
The sector is also not far from Kabale town. In case you need any service such as banking; it is very easy to connect to the city center from the Ruhija sector than any other sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Community Tourism
Compared to the Buhoma sector, the Ruhija sector is not as good as the Buhoma sector in regard to community activities. However, do the fact that the Ruhija sector offers some cultural and community tours as well; there is no reason enough to choose another sector over Ruhija because of community activities.
The village people in the Ruhija sector usually perform to tourists before the gorilla trek. They also offer some performance on demand after the gorilla trek.
One thing that has made the Ruhija sector appreciatable is the community-run accommodation such as the Ruhija community rest camp. They offer some of the best budget accommodations in the Ruhija sector.
Prime Birding Sector
The Ruhija sector is the leading birding haven of Bwindi impenetrable national park. With about 400 bird species; the sector is highly recommended for those interested in Birding. Gorilla trekking in the Ruhija sector is usually a half-day activity. It is therefore possible to trek gorillas half your day and go birding later in the evening.
A full day of birding in the Ruhija sector will give you the opportunity to walk along most of the trails in the Ruhija sector. Unlike nature walks, birding in the Ruhija sector will most likely give you an opportunity to encounter other animal species during your forest treks.
