Who are the Bwata People?
Batwa people are the original inhabitants of Bwindi Forest or you can call them “forest dwellers” who depend on hunting and fruit gathering. The Batwa pygmies stayed in the Bwindi forest until 1992 when the government of Uganda in conjunction with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) proposed to gazette the entire Bwindi forest thus relocating them near the Bakiga community- outside the forest.
While on a cultural tour, the Batwa offers many activities as discussed below:
1. Visit the Bakiga traditional households which is also known as the local museum with many tools. Look at the old tool used by the Batwa and the Bakiga people and how to use them.
2. Visit local herbs clinic – interact with the local medicine men and learn how to use local herbs to treat some diseases.
3. Visit the pre-historic granaries (Food story) where the Batwa and Bakiga people used to store food.
4. Visit the coffee and tea processing plant – learn how coffee and tea are processed. Taste the already-processed coffee and tea.
5. African traditional Kitchen – witness how local food is prepared- participate in local food preparation and taste.
6. Visit the local brewery and witness how wine, gin, and juice are locally produced and distilled.
