Tourists who fall in the above categories are advised to inform their local tour operators about their issues in advance. Yes, Gorilla trekking is a lifetime experience but some people are not sure whether they can accomplish the task based on their status.
What can be done to enable such people do gorilla trekking successfully?
First of all, the tourist has to inform their ground tour operators prior to the trekking date. The tour operator can do the ground logistics before the actual safari dates.
- The tour operator on the ground can book a short trek. The rangers know which gorilla families with tough treks and those with easy or short treks.
- Your tour operator can prepare to hire porters. At least two porters per person to carry luggage for easy movement of the trekkers without extra load.
- A walking stick is essential for all trekkers. Ensure that walking sticks are readily available at the park headquarters.
- Trekkers with special cases will be put in one group. The rangers will handle them accordingly. The walking speed will be low, walk through a clear path among others.
- The local tour operators know sectors that offer easy treks in terms of relief. If you are not strong enough, forego Ruhija and Nkuringo sectors. Rushaga and Buhoma sectors offer relatively simple treks based on the topography/ relief.
- In case a trekker gets exhausted during the course of Gorilla trekking, the rangers can communicate with porters to prepare stretchers.
- Stay near the park – staying within the park or nearby outside accommodation will save you from long early morning travels to the park headquarters. Report to the park headquarters early enough to prepare for the actual gorilla trekking exercise.
- In case you are on medication, move with your tablets and take them at the right time
- Equip yourself with all the necessary trekking gear like hiking shoes, long-sleeved clothes, a hat, sunglasses, waterproof clothes, and bottled mineral water for refreshment.
